Rocoto (Capsicum pubescens) is one of the oldest domesticated pepper species in the Americas, with cultivation in the Andean highlands documented for over 5,000 years. It is uniquely distinguished by its black seeds, hairy leaves, and purple flowers—characteristics found in no other domesticated pepper species. The round to pear-shaped fruits have thick, juicy flesh and are widely used fresh in Peruvian and Bolivian cuisine, especially in rocoto relleno (stuffed rocoto).
